Telescopes: Looking Back in Time and Into the Future of Astronomy [VIDEO]

In What Sense are Telescopes like Time Machines?

Using telescopes to look into space at different distances gives us a glimpse into different epochs of the universe.

Types of Telescopes Astronomers Use

Furthermore, different types of telescopes allow for different kinds of observations. Infrared, ultraviolet light, visible light, space telescopes, and ground telescopes are all highly specific for certain types of research. Astronomers use this whole spectrum of information to build a comprehensive understanding of the universe.

A century ago, scientists were debating whether the universe always existed or whether it had a beginning. As telescopes began to get more sophisticated, observations indicated that our universe had a spectacular beginning.

What Will Be the Next New Discoveries in Space?

Now, with telescopes such as the James Webb, astronomers are learning even more about the origin and evolution of our universe and whether life could possibly exist on planets outside our solar system.

In this video, Dr. Jennifer Wiseman explains how scientists leverage the power of telescopes and shares what might be on the horizon as astronomers continue to explore and discover with these incredible tools.
